The Sage Wind Blows Cold Mac Crow Thrillers Book 1 edition by Clint Hollingsworth Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was difficult to put it down.
The only regret I have in reading it is that I now fear the time it will take Hollingsworth to write the next adventure about Mackenzie Crow, the main character.
Seldom do you see a read wherein the author has such a grasp or the talents evident in Mac. Many can write about martial arts, even more can write about firearms and violence, but it is a rare author who can write with the in depth insights of tracking and straight awareness skills. Those are the skill sets that makes the character so unique… those skills are one of the reasons it is so fun to read about him – that and his relationships with the others in the book.
Clint, how are you coming with Volume 2? I’m hooked )
Engaging characters. Good story line. I really enjoyed the adventure! Looking forward to reading more. So glad i happened upon it.
Hollingsworth writes in a specific, and under-served, niche thrillers starring a protagonist that is well versed in tracking and wilderness survival. As a teen, I devoured the works of authors like Tom Brown Jr., Jack London, and Gary Paulsen. These books instilled in me a love of the outdoors and primitive skills that continues to the present day. I found (and loved) Hollingsworth’s Wandering Ones webcomic nearly a decade ago, but wasn’t sure he would be able to successfully transition from comics to novels. My concerns were unfounded.
Hollingsworth tells a fast-paced and engaging story, using a clean narrative style reminiscent of Jim Butcher. The Sage Wind Blows Cold is one of the best debut novels I have read, and I look forward to adding it (and Hollingsworths future novels) to the shelf alongside my old favorites.
Full disclosure I've been a fan of Clint's since the early 2000's with his work on The Wandering Ones. It's a pleasure to follow him into the "grown-up" world of novels.
Sage Wind was actually a bit of a page turner for me. Clint does a good job of translating action and brutality into written prose. Make no mistake there is violence in the book, but it's not without due. Outside of a couple of typos the writing is solid, the characters interesting, and some of the developments are less than expected. I will admit that Mac can be a little bit of a Mary Sue in the present, he does have a mildly checkered past and it plays into his current predicament.
In all, a very solid read and great first outing for Clint.
An action movie in book form, but also a mental and spiritual growth, Sage Wind is an excellent read from an author already known for putting story in comic form. It's great to see that his prose is just as sweet without pictures to back it up. There are scenes of violence but they are brief and mostly necessary to the story. If you like stories of underdogs pursued by rich maniacs, wilderness tracking and detective work, and spiritual "woo" read away! You wont regret the chill you'll get from The Sage Wind Blows Cold.
Compelling story with great dialogue. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Easy to follow with very little graphic brutality.
"Nothing I loved better than being told I was of little use or having him bring up my mom in front of Vinnie and Rosa."
“Do you know what Frank does for a living, Mac?” She asked quietly. I shook my head. “He sells high-end foreign cars in Bellevue. He’s by far the company’s best salesperson, and manages to talk a good eighty percent of the people he meets on the lot into buying a luxury car that half of them have to go into serious debt to afford.”
"I’m not sure I follow the train of thought here…” I said.
"He’s also really good at selling romance,” she replied. “At least until you drive it off the lot.”
I may re-read this story and look forward to other works by this author.
This first fiction novel by author Clint Hollingsworth, creator of the very entertaining Wandering Ones web comic, is an action/thriller set in the Pacific Northwest. The plot is reasonably complex, without becoming convoluted and imploding under its own weight. The pacing of the novel is very good, especially in light of the fact that this is a first novel. The characters are developed sufficiently to keep the plot moving along, and it appears that the protagonist will grow in complexity in future books in this series. A special treat not found in other action/thriller novels is the author's interest and description of wilderness tracking and related subjects. The author deftly touches on this matter, without burying the reader with a lengthy discourse on the topic. In all, it is an entertaining and somewhat informative read that is likely to appeal to anyone who enjoys thrillers (think Tom Clancy) and books about the outdoors (i.e. Jon Krakauer's work). Mr. Hollingsworth has spun a fine tale here.
